Challenge I: Week 3

Week 3 is over, thank God. A lot went on this week. I didn’t have a ton of time to do school, since I was at a writing conference for the weekend. It was a great experience! If you enjoy writing, I suggest going to a conference.

Math

Math was super low-key this week, since I was waiting for my new geometry textbook to come in to the mail. I reviewed some math rules, and that was it.

Latin/Foreign Language

As I mentioned last week, I am no longer doing Henle Latin.  However, I will read the assigned lesson before seminar, so I can keep in touch with my class.  I hope to post an in-depth article about this sometime in the future.

I am reviewing Spanish I, which I took several years ago, in preparation for Spanish II next year.  I use Duolingo for this, as well as the Modern States Spanish course.  Both are free, which is a huge bonus!

Physical Science

Physical Science is pretty simple.  Classical Conversations has me spend two weeks on a module, which is roughly 25 pages, including large tables, figures, and photographs.  So, this week was just a continuation of last week’s information.

Traditional Logic

This week I learned about comprehension and extension, the two properties of simple apprehension, in a simple chapter with daily exercises.  The workbook included with the Logic test conveniently divides the exercises into four days.  I usually do five days of school, though, so the fifth day I spend reviewing or working on other subjects which require more time.

Exposition

The rest of my class wrote an LTW essay, format essay two, on The Sign of the Beaver.  I wrote an essay six format essay on The Red Badge of Courage essay this week.  Because I picked a vague thesis (“War made Henry Fleming more mature”), I had difficulty writing this essay.  I ended up doing four drafts with extensive edits by my mom and me.  In the end, it turned out okay.  I enjoyed writing it, though, and I’m glad I skipped ahead.  Honestly, the essay two format is really boring, especially after having gone through it two years already in Challenge A and B.

American Government

Like last week, I read and annotated several American documents.  This week we focused on articles about the structure of the American government.  A subject like this one is very time-consuming, so I’ll have to figure out how to scale this one down next week.

The Challenge I guide also assigned a portion of the Declaration of Independence to memorize.  Here’s the text:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, — That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.

Team Policy

I’m counting Team Policy debate as a separate subject, although it is included under the Debate strand which includes American Government.  This seventh subject takes up just as much time as another whole strand.

I struggled with comprehending the structure of Team Policy, which is a lot more complicated than I had expected.  My tutor assigned roles this week: I’m doing the First Negative Constructive, which is supposed to set up the negative argument and cross-examine the Second Affirmative.  Do not ask me what those terms mean . . .
